Location: Portumna, County Galway, Republic of Ireland
Owner: Al Hayes Motors Ltd.
Client: Bilcon Construction
Value: Euro 5 million (approximately R 40million)

Description:
Al Hayes Motors Ltd., a VW dealership, is one of the largest car showrooms in Ireland. The new development at Portumna comprised the construction of a Showroom with a plan area of approximately 800m2, and a Workshop with a plan area of approximately 1600m2.
The new facility was to be in strict accordance with the architectural guidelines laid down by the Volkswagen Corporation of Germany, and will be characterised by a dramatic inclind glass facade. The Project was tendered on a Design & Build basis, and was awarded to Bilcon Construction.
Bilcon Construction in turn appointed Exstrado as their structural engineering consultants for the project.

Services Provided: Exstrado is responsible for all structural engineering aspects of the project.

This includes

  • Analysis, design and detailing of the workshop in structural steel
  • Analysis, design and detailing of the showroom area in structural steel
  • Retaining walls
  • Ground bearing and suspended floors
Further, due to the over performance of the Irish Construction Industry, and the concomitant long lead times associated with the procurement and fabrication of structural steel, exstrado assisted Bilcon with the procurement and fabrication of all of the structural steel elements, with a total mass of 110tonne, in Cape Town, South Africa. The structural steel elements were designed, detailed and fabricated so that they could all be containerised and shipped to Ireland. All of the structural steel arrived on site on time and to excellent standards of quality, thereby making a significant contribution to ensuring that the project could be completed within the challenging 48-week programme.
